Years ago, when I first started my health journey, someone commented that I was lucky to be thin. I immediately thought about all the effort I put into staying in shape: watching what I eat and ensuring I get my workouts in. It wasn't luck at all—I simply knew the secrets to weight management. And all that effort wasn’t hard, it was just a different way to live life than a lot of people choose.
Recently, I had a conversation with someone seeking the secrets to good health. Although she had already discovered and implemented many of these practices, our discussion made me realize that these simple habits aren't common knowledge. Unfortunately, there's so much misinformation out there, and people are often confused about nutrition. I wish people knew how simple and straightforward living a healthy lifestyle can be.
So, I decided to combine my 12 years of healthy living experience with everything I've learned from my Health Coaching Certification, my Bachelor's degree in Nutrition, and the numerous books and podcasts I've consumed. The result is what I believe to be the top 12 secrets to health. These are practices I follow almost every day which gives me good energy, weight maintenance, no tummy troubles, good sleep, and overall happiness most of the time.
12 Secrets to Health
1. Eat mostly real, whole, unprocessed foods.
2. Get 25-30 g of fiber every day.
3. Aim for .8-1 gram of protein per pound of ideal body weight every day.
4. Structure 3 meals a day with protein, veggies, a complex carb, and about .5-1 TBS healthy fats. (Go here for a free guide on how to do this)
5. Allow yourself 1 treat a day (maybe more if you aren’t trying to lose weight!)
6. Eat enough at meals to stay satisfied for several hours.
7. Reduce snacking as much as possible.
8. Do strength training at least 2-3 times a week.
9. Move your body every day. Walking counts!
10. Get your heart rate up 2-3 times a week.
11. Manage your stress- by relaxing more or meditation or doing something you enjoy.
12. Get 7-8 hours of sleep each night.
